Adolescent Found Deceased Following Untrue Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased only a few days following being wrongly accused of taking the ashes of a dead infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his body in his room at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
False Accusations Start
The investigation heard how his mother received a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if Kai was her child. The message added: "Inform him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a testimony read to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, claiming her baby's remains had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An investigation report from police later determined the supposed burglary victim had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that said property was not taken in the first place".
Media reports about the alleged stolen ashes generated online comments, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his mother said people "knew it was him".
The "online posts were really upsetting", she stated.
Mental Wellbeing Impact
She explained that her son had been identified with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views genuinely were important to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a police station and later released under investigation.
Police said they would be in contact, the inquest heard, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could feel like much longer".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her son informed her he had entered the house because the woman who lived there had said he could use the bathroom whenever he wanted, but denied taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her son was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The proceedings heard that one young adult urged the teenager to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he passed away, describing how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "caring, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
School Response
The inquest received testimony from educational personnel at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On November 8th, she "overheard some students talking that Kai had been detained and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she called the family's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.
The court heard his family said they did not receive that communication.
Official Finding
Lead investigator informed the hearing he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he said: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely untruths were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of social media.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and after his questioning he was released whilst inquiries continued."
The official determined: "Exists no proof that the acts or omissions of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is impossible to determine his intent."
