Taliban Authorities and Pakistani Forces Report Multiple Deaths in Recent Border Fighting
Fresh fighting broke out along the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier early on Wednesday morning, with both parties blaming the opposing side of initiating lethal clashes.
The Pakistani military announced that its forces had eliminated "15-20 Afghan Taliban" and injured many in the Spin Boldak frontier area.
A Taliban government representative claimed that 12 non-combatants had been fatally struck and more than 100 wounded by Pakistani firing. He further stated that numerous military personnel had been killed. None of the reported fatalities could be verified by third parties.
Violence between the neighbors has escalated since explosions rocked Afghanistan recently, which the Afghan capital attributed on Pakistan. The Taliban reject allegations that it is sheltering armed groups targeting Pakistan.
Online Platforms and Armed Confrontations
The opposing forces are not only battling for the upper hand on the frontier, but also on social media, trying to persuade the public that their side is causing more damage.
The latest clashes follow intense border confrontations over the past few days, when the Afghan forces asserted to have killed 58 members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Pakistan said it neutralized two hundred "militants and linked insurgents". The reported casualty figures provided by each side could not be confirmed by external sources.
Several days of unstable peace that had persisted since the weekend were broken on Wednesday.
Local Reports and Consequences
Videos allegedly of the fighting and its aftereffects have been circulated on the internet and on social channels, including footage claiming to be of those killed and blurry shots from night vision cameras claiming to be of check posts demolished. These videos have not been authenticated.
A source in the border area in Afghanistan reported that fighting broke out at around 04:00 local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on the previous day). Another resident in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the border crossing, reported that "very heavy hostilities persisted for almost several hours".
"We observed drones and jets soaring over us, a number of our relatives are injured," they said.
A medical professional in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak reported that he counted "seven fatalities and 36 injured brought to the hospital", including males, females and children.
The situation were "tense" and additional victims were being transferred to medical care, he said.
Evacuations and Global Responses
A local Taliban official in Spin Boldak stated that "numerous of households have been forced to flee since last night due to the heavy clashes". He mentioned they were on "high alert" after a several Taliban posts were targeted by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the remains of 2 armed forces members.
In a separate overnight engagement on Pakistan's north-western border, the Islamabad's forces said that twenty-five to thirty Taliban and local insurgent fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated.
The hostilities have led to appeals for reduced tensions from other countries including China and Russia, as well as a proposal from the American leader that he could intervene to broker peace.
On Wednesday, a UN official, United Nations representative on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, posted on X that he was "deeply concerned" by accounts of civilian casualties and displacement because of the clashes.
"I urge all parties to exercise the utmost caution, safeguard non-combatants, and abide by international law," he wrote.
Long-Standing Disputes
Pakistan has for years accused the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistan Taliban to operate from their territory and battle against the Islamabad government in an effort to impose a strict religion-based system of rule.
The Taliban leadership has consistently denied these allegations.
